Beyond the Pages
Oh, words of inspiration
How you comfort and console
As I read about the workings
Of the power in my soul
The words are reassuring
The pages, wet with tears
Oh, how I know the truth is here
The truth outshines my fears
I want the jewel beyond the page
I want what caused the words
I want the feelings all the time
God speaks to us I've heard
Within my soul, a sweet release
Sweeps away my unbelief
I know He's here to my relief
My mind, in Christ, is now unleashed
God's Word will shine through for the ages
As we take its truth beyond the pages
Of course God's Word, the Bible, is necessary and it should be studied vehemently. What this poem speaks of, however, is of having a strong desire to know God directly, beyond mere words that we may read in the Holy Book (or any book, for that matter). If we are not craving, deeply for the Source of those inspired words, for God, then we are not really living at all but pretending to live, and pretending to worship. It is necessary to want with all our souls, to know God directly and to feel His answers and to hear His Holy Spirit at all times. If we are not deeply wanting this, then, more than likely, we are deeply wanting something else. Look at your life and ask, “What do I really want?” Does what you want make sense or should there be a re-evaluation and a new determination about what you want? If you are apathetic about this, this is only an indicator that you have fallen under the spell of the world and believe in its futility and perpetual gloom. This, however, is not God's will for you.
