There Was a Teacher Long Ago
There was a teacher long ago
Who told of laws that we could know
He told us how the strong, not weak
Will gladly turn the other cheek
He told us how the Word's a seed
That falls on rocky ground, indeed
The Word, so great on Sunday morn
Seems a mistake when Monday's born
He told us how the seed could fall
In the thistle-grow and stall
Choked by guilt or other weeds
That are not of our highest needs
He told us how the seed could grow
In fertile soil if we'd know
That there is nothing we should see
But God throughout our history
He said we must not ever fear
If we have ears to hear, then hear
Believe with all within that knows
The Word will then begin to grow
The Word will sprout with tiny leaves
Then strengthen as we so believe
And soon the Word will flourish strong
Within our hearts and minds this song
Will sing and sing and sing and sing
The Truth in mind and heart will ring
And as the bell of love does sound
The world around us will resound
With heartfelt love that we have found
There was a teacher long ago
Who taught the laws that we could know
He lived them, too, and to this day
None have had success His way
None have ever felt the good
That so consistently, He could
No one has ever loved so much
That throughout history the touch
Of what he did and what He said
Echoes through our modern heads
Incredible as we may think
He came to give us our true link
To God, our Father, Him we praise
He leads us out of this worldly maze
