Veering

I traveled on the steepest path
To find I slid back down
I traveled into people's wrath
        I've seen them turn around

I've rambled in a circle
I've trudged on through a square
And everywhere I've traveled
        I was expected there

And though it seems my path's a scrawl
        A squiggle on some map
And though sometimes it seems I fall
And all my strength is sapped

And though I've listened carefully
To those who say they know
I've listened to God's Spirit in me
And found the way to go

Is not a path that's straight and true
        Toward some far distant goal
But slowly stepping right on through
        Though round-about I go

poem, poetry
