Mother
Bill needed to get his mother a Mother's Day card. Though he looked at every card in the local greeting card store, nothing said how he felt about his mother. All he saw were cards that said, "You were always there when I needed you" or "Thank you for being so kind and loving and thoughtful." He was looking for a card that said, "Where was the mother that you were supposed to be?"
Bill was very disappointed in his mother. She was nothing that any of his expectations of moms were. Suddenly Bill got an inspiration that he was to get a card that embodied all the attributes of the mom he didn't think he had. He looked for the card with the most flattering remarks, the most tender sentiments, the most loving attributes he could find. He bought it but he couldn't ascertain why.
On Mother's Day, Bill gave his mother the card. She burst into tears when she read it and said, "I didn't know you thought of me this way!"
It was the beginning of a new life for Bill and his mom. Surprisingly enough, his mom began to live the phrases she read on that card. Because her son, Bill, gave the little willingness to see beyond her faults, she, on her own, began to embody the Spirit of Motherhood and all that it meant.
(I heard this true story in a class several years ago in California. I do not remember the actual names of the participants.)
