Chapter 11
Finding God
I just read the chapter in Richard Dawkins' book, which purports to explain away all personal miracles of supernatural occurrences. This chapter points to the fact that the brain is quite capable of twisting its input. External mysteries, like seeing a strange face in a window, upon closer examination might reveal a twisted curtain. Our environment can trick us into believing something is scary, but when the truth is made known, that thing is no longer scary. Dawkins said that once he heard a moaning ghost, when he was a child, but upon closer examination, he found it was the wind blowing through a keyhole. All things, he boasted, can be explained without bringing in a supernatural God or His supernatural power. In addition, mind altering drugs can interfere with our perception and make us think something is real, when it isn't. Jesus did say that we are not to judge by appearances. I think I am correct in saying that the atheist has chosen to judge only by physical appearances. The atheist thinks all the answers anyone will EVER need, can be found in the natural realm. However, even as they claim we can't trust our brains, the atheist has put all his trust in his.
Dawkins enclosed all of his experiences, past, present and future, into his atheistic worldview. And there appears to be nothing that anyone can say to break him out of his self-imposed, godless view. Of course, from his point of view, all we Christians have wrapped ourselves into a God-fantasy worldview, from which we will allow no one to extricate us from OUR madness. Certainly, it works both ways.
All this just goes to prove that it is what we believe that makes our world. Not the other way around. Those who have been exposed to Jesus, in a time when they were more open to the truth, find God and put their faith in Him, but those who have found false gods, or other belief systems—that are not the truth (because, remember, there is only one truth), find their false foundations to live by. Once this "false truth" is crystallized, it is hard to break from because, by belief, many things crop up to prove that a false proof is true. The foundation, when it is built on incorrect premises, will not stand when things go awry. Pontius Pilate, in discussing Jesus' fate with him, asked the great question, "What is truth?" Though it appears to be whatever one finds, that isn't necessarily the truth. There is only one truth. The truth was revealed only with Jesus, who came from outside our perceptive realm, as God incarnate, revealing His teaching and His salvation for us all (who choose to believe on Him).
The moaning of the wind through a keyhole may not be a ghost—but what it is in the natural world, is just as fantastic. I want to analyze the supernatural occurrences I just shared under the light of the criticisms that Dawkins leveled at miracles in general.
The first one was a brief arrangement of random dots from a screensaver forming a heart and I interpreted it as God acknowledging the love I had for my wife, who was dying of cancer. Though this one could easily be explained away as a hallucination, I will always remember it as a sign of acknowledgment of our love, by my God, who cares deeply for each of us. No skeptic will ever be able to take that precious moment from me.
Let me briefly analyze the other three amazing communications of God. I had been talking to Eva, my future wife, whom I had met on a Christian singles website, for many weeks, each night. I had planned to go out to Indiana from Idaho and meet her, but that was as far as we had gone. One morning during my prayer time, I received a thought (not an audible voice) that was very foreign to my own thoughts. "Why don't you look into what it takes to get married in Indiana?" It turns out she, too, had gotten the same thought. This one is a little more difficult to explain away because we both had the same supernatural experience of hearing what God wanted us to do, at the same time. In the light of the tremendously wonderful fruit of our marriage (songs, books, spiritual growth), I have to chalk this one up to God. How else could it be explained? By a real stretch of the imagination, we could call it coincidence, but I think that takes more faith than a simple belief in God's hand upon our lives.
The next one was what I've come to call my "Sky Card". The Z, heart, and cross did not mean anything to me, when I first witnessed their successive formation. I don't see how I could have made them up, when I had no idea of the Scripture to which it would be referring. Even if the message had just been a slight of hand (or a magic trick) that my mind was playing on me, I still would have to designate God as the cause of it in this case, because the message was so profound and verifiably accurate by God's Word, the Bible. However, for the record, I really did watch this cloud presentation and, due to its long term effects on encouraging my faith in God, I give Him the glory for this supernatural occurrence.
The final one, with the cloud shaped opening window, has a time span that covers 25 years. Recall the huge window in the sky, and my being inspired to write a poem which had a commitment to God that I wanted to be His opening window, distributing His fruit of the Spirit (love, joy and peace). Then, fast forward 25 years. I am unable to open the window in the RV, and Eva couldn't either. I opened a blind and saw baby spiders just then hatching out of an egg on a blind. I removed them quickly. The next morning the window opened easily. God's message, spanning a quarter of a century, is well taken. I see that He wants us to remove the infestation, before the window in our hearts will be able to open, distributing the fruit of the Spirit. This one was entirely of God as well.
I know that the only way anyone will know God is by exercising faith. I plead with the atheist to use the scientific method, with himself as the guinea pig. Richard Dawkins, presented some sarcastic examples of "proofs" for God's existence on page 85 of his book. These proofs were from a site (godlessgeeks) on the Internet. The proof numbered "38" comes the closest to being an actual method for finding God. It is called the argument from sheer will and he said it goes like this: I do believe in God! I do believe in God! I do, I do, I do. I do believe in God! Therefore God exists.
I said this was a close method, but I didn't say a successful method. We need to alter it because number "38" has a few things going against it that need to be corrected, in order for the user to tap into God, and actually receive a life-changing response. The atheist must temporarily suspend his belief that there is no God. He can pick up that belief again after this experiment, if he really still wants it. Give this experiment a fair amount of time. Perhaps a couple of weeks or a month. I'm going to take the atheist step by step through a formula that will allow him to experience God. Follow my instructions carefully, so that the experiment will be successful:
1. Temporarily, at least, you must drop the sarcastic spirit, during this experiment. Temporarily, at least, you must pretend that God does exist.
2. The proof found in Number 38 is to just pound God's existence into one's head. This, more than likely, won't work. You must have a reason to need God, first. You must desire to surrender, let go, and give God the opportunity to solve the problem (whatever it may be). It would be helpful if you presented a problem to God that you have tried to solve, but were unsuccessful. The answer that comes will address this important issue. It must be humbly presented to God by prayer from one's heart. That means the issue should be presented to God with a deep sorrow that this issue remains unsolved. There must be a desire that it be solved—once and for all. You will obtain your proof that God exists, because a sincere prayer to Him will be answered. What issue from life will you present to God? Life presents each of us problems in relationships, at work or with family and friends, problems with our physical bodies, problems with our attitudes, our anger, our sense of being treated unfairly--the list goes on and on. Choose any one of them.
3. Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes, and talk, either silently in your head, or aloud, and address God, through His Son, Jesus Christ. Present the problem that you want solved. Don't come at this with a preconceived notion that God doesn't exist. That must be dropped in order to experience His presence. Ask Jesus to show God to you. Ask Him to provide an answer to the situation.
4. If you don't get an immediate response, you must wait upon God expectantly for a time. God only shows himself to the humble in heart. Those who are proud and only concerned about themselves, who are unable to show compassion for others, will not have successful results. You may want to ask God for a humble heart, which is necessary in order to receive an answer from God.
5. If you are not willing to submit to this procedure, including within it the proper attitudes mentioned above, then you are showing close-mindedness and prejudice not fitting a true scientist. For what scientist would attempt to leave out all the vital conditions required for the success of his experiment? The reasons for laughing this off as pure nonsense, then, must stem from something other than an inquiring mind who truly wants to know if something is valid or not. Maybe that is the issue you would want to bring to this experiment. Ask God, not flippantly, not sarcastically, but sincerely, to show to you, Himself.
Dear God, give Richard Dawkins and all other atheists, a sincere desire to know You. Please make their hearts hunger for You. Remove any God-filters the atheists are wearing that makes them unable to see You. Give them a desire to change their direction and share Your Gospel, Your good news, instead of condemning it. Let them see unmistakable evidence of You, Lord. And above all, show them how much You love them. In Jesus mighty name I pray, amen.
