Chapter 10

The Opening Window

I was 28 years old and was on my way to work at the Healthful Diet Shoppe in North Miami Beach, Florida, where I was a manager. I turned a corner and beheld in the sky a huge window (shaped by the clouds). My breath was taken away. It was a perfectly shaped window, taking up most of the western sky. After I parked and entered into the health food store, I grabbed some paper and wrote a poem I entitled, "The Opening Window." In that poem, I remembered God's promise to those who tithed, as mentioned in the book of Malachi, that the windows of heaven will open and there shall not be room enough to hold the riches. With tears rolling down my cheeks, I prayed to God that I didn't want His windows to open, but that I wanted to be His opening window.

Over time I learned that in order for us to be His opening window, the fruit of the Spirit must come forth from our hearts and be distributed throughout this dark and cold world. The fruit of the Spirit is, among other things, love, joy, and peace.

25 years later, I was married to Eva, living in an RV on some friends' property. It was a fairly hot evening and I meandered back to our daughter's room to open a window. I tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. The metal stick with which one pushed the window open simply would not budge it. I called Eva back for her to try, but she could not open it either. I tried again. It was stuck. The blinds were closed and I decided to open them to get a better look at what might be causing the window to be stuck. There, on one of the blinds, was a spider eggsack just hatching with baby spiders spilling out onto the blind and a potential of hundreds of baby spiders soon to make their way out into the world (and into my daughter's bed). I ran to get a tissue to eliminate that disaster.

The next morning, I went outside to see what might be blocking the window. There was nothing apparent. I did not touch the window from the outside. I went back in and tried to open the window again. It opened at my slightest touch. I wondered what had blocked it the night before. Over time, I combined my earlier window-shaped cloud experience, together with this experience which happened 25 years later and came up with the following truth:

In order for the windows in our hearts to open, and the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy and peace) to be distributed in this cold and dark world, the blinds must be opened (we must be willing to see), exposing the infestation (or sins) that we couldn't see before (symbolized by the spiders hatching). That infestation must be eliminated. When it is, the window of our hearts will open with ease and the fruit of the Spirit, so lacking in this world, will pour forth, blessing all who are willing to be blessed. Since there is only one truth and that truth is found in Jesus Christ, submission to Him and a willingness to do His commands, must be acknowledged. This process will not work without the foundation, the rock of salvation in place, as Jesus Christ is humbly invited into our hearts. It is He who does the work, not us. And, His work is done by our belief that He will do the work. In other words, we must have faith.

God wants to wipe out the infestations (or sins) in our hearts and when He does, He will open up the floodgates and let His Spirit pour in. What an awesome day that will be for us, who individually submit to this cleansing, as well as for the entire body of Christ!

Despite appearances to the contrary, not only is there a God, but He has a plan for us that is good. I pray that Professor Dawkins, and others, could experience the sheer joy of a personal God and Savior, Who loves to do preposterous things to show His love to His children!
